Glyn Sharp fell in love with the ocean at the age of 11 and with the inspiration of Jacques Cousteau became a certified diver and competitive free diver by the age of 14. As a young biologist with Applied Marine Research Ltd he participated in a range of projects from resource assessment to shellfish aquaculture development.
As an applied phycologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Glyn provided the biological data to manage a 20 million dollar marine plant industry in the Canadian Maritimes. He has interacted with all levels of the marine plant industry, from harvesters to international processing companies, from Norway to the Philippines.
To assess resources he utilizes various technologies, from remote sensing and side scan sonar to underwater photography. International projects include development of Senegalese seaweed resources and the use of algae as bio-indicators in eutrophic Cuban bays. In aquaculture of marine plants and shellfish projects he brings new techniques and approaches to solve industrial problems.
While with DFO Glyn was also the project leader tasked to determine optimal designs for artificial reef development in Atlantic Canada, as compensation or mitigation measures for marine impacts. Presently, he is consulting on assessment and development of sub-arctic marine resources in Nunavik.
Glyn Sharp provides innovative and traditionally appropriate approaches to harvesting and processing in environments experiencing the impacts of climate change.
