North American HF Radar Sites Online
Through a project sponsored by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), synoptic surface current data generated by HF radars located throughout the USA and Canada can be viewed and downloaded via the internet. Nearly all of the radars are CODAR SeaSondes. To view the online map click here. This project is part of the overall NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) which is dedicated to providing ocean data and products to the public and decision makers for real-time as well as retrospective views of the oceanic environment.

The Search and Rescue (SAR) branch of the Canadian Coast Guard, Maritimes Region, is participating in this online surface current mapping project through inclusion of its Long-range CODAR SeaSondes located in Southwest Nova Scotia. This Canadian SAR project was initiated in 2007 with the installation of SeaSondes near Lockeport and Clarke's Harbour. A third unit will be installed in SW Nova in the fall of 2008. Financial support is provided through partnering agencies and the Canadian Search and Rescue New Initiatives Fund (SAR NIF). Check-out OEA's News section for additional information on these SeaSonde installations.
