SW Nova CODAR Surface Current Data Available Online
Release Date: 5 May 2008
Sea-surface current data produced by three long-range CODAR SeaSondes operating in southwestern Nova Scotia is now publicly available, online, through a Web-mapping project (HFRNET) sponsored by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Web site is operated by the Coastal Observing Research and Development Center, which is associated with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, La Jolla, California. Almost all of the HF radars shown on the Web site are CODAR SeaSondes.
HFRNET is operated as a research project and its data are provided free-of-charge along with a disclaimer pertaining to the site's research focus.
The three SW Nova sites include Clarke's Harbour and West Head (Lockeport), operated by the Canadian Coast Guard, and Cape St. Mary's, which is operated by the University of Maine.
The Canadian Coast Guard plans to add another SeaSonde to the SW Nova network later this year, while U. Maine is working towards installation of a long-range SeaSonde on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick. The latter will network with the existing SW Nova SeaSondes.
