Ocean intelligence in the maritime battle space
Ocean intelligence in the maritime battle space - analysis and recommendations for a Canadian Forces maritime environmental assessment program, DRDC-Atlantic CR 2003-176, 63 pp, 2003.
Abstract
In the maritime battle space, the state of the ocean can have a profound impact on the performance of naval sensors, weapons, vessels and the human operators. Operational knowledge of the state of the ocean or "ocean intelligence" can represent a substantive military advantage. Recently, great advances have been made in the U.S. and Europe in the modelling and prediction of ocean environmental conditions on spatial scales ranging from coastal to global. This report contains a review of the current state of the art in ocean intelligence, analysis of the Canadian Forces' (CF) capability and an analysis of the CF's ocean intelligence requirements. These components are then interpreted in the form of recommendations for the CF to best take advantage of potential operational ocean intelligence products.
